Anatomy

The prostate is a gland located in the pelvis of the male. It is made up of muscular fibers that surround a portion of the urethra and of glandular tissue that secretes prostate-specific acid phosphatase (PAP), necessary for liquefying semen. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein that is made by prostate cells. It can be elevated in benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement), prostatitis (prostate infection) and cancer.
